Rhine revisited

A view of the Rhine at dusk

Doreen Taylor was so enamoured by her cruise along the Rhine that she has returned for two more

It was our third trip to the Rhine and Moselle. We were looking forward to joining our ship, Rex Rheni, because we knew we would be looked after by the captain and staff and that they'd provide us with a wonderful itinerary, delicious menus and plentiful entertainment.

Our journey began in Dover where we took the short crossing to Calais and continued by coach to the ship. We travelled through Belgium and were on board in no time, ready to enjoy our first evening meal with the passengers and crew.

Our cruise took us down the Rhine and gave us the opportunity to relax on deck and marvel at the medieval castles, churches and neat rows of vines on the hillsides. Koblenz is one of our favourite places as it has lots of history, especially in the narrow streets of the Old Town. It is situated on the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle and its cafes and shops are always a pleasure to browse.

Travelling further along the river we headed into the Rhine Gorge, a breathtaking place of beauty where you wonder what you will find around the next bend. It is a place of legends and myths and the route through rugged hills leads to the spectacular Lorelei Rock.

We liked Boppard, St Goar and the other small, sleepy villages that bordered both rivers. Mooring up gave us the freedom to enjoy the hospitality and wine tasting these charming villages offered.

The Moselle Valley was just as beautiful and exciting as the Rhine Valley. There was the charming village of Cochem where there were shops full of souvenirs and cafes lining the river. Its fairytale castle stood high on the hillside and towered above the town, and from its panoramic position we could see down to the river and our ship berthed in the distance.

I cannot praise the region enough. If you're looking for beautiful scenery, tranquillity and five-star treatment, then a Saga river cruise is the holiday to take.
